Snatam Kaur

About the Artist

Snatam Kaur was introduced to music and spiritual practice at an early age. Schooled in kirtan, meditation and Gurmukhi, the Sanskrit-based language of Sikh scriptures from Nothern India, the young Snatam Kaur began to develop the devotion and skills that have grown and blossomed into a compelling, profound talent.

Snatam Kaur’s parents brought her up in the Sikh tradition as taught by Yogi Bhajan. Her Sikh community augmented these lessons with instruction in kirtan (devotional chanting). "Through these experiences, I learned the pronunciation," she says, "but also I learned the passion for what I was singing because these gatherings were so spiritual."

Grace

Grace

Grace brims with an understated joy. Seamlessly integrating with Gurmukhi mantras with English songs, this CD has the potential to break through to audiences not familiar with her previous albums, PREM and SHANTI. With deeply-moving music composed jointly by Snatam Kaur and Thomas Barquee, Snatam’s flawless voice dances over gentle flute, Indian violin, nylon string guitar and subtle keyboards. Of the album, Snatam says, "This timeless, sacred energy comes to us by Grace. It is not about you or me, it is about Grace. And so, with this album called Grace, I honour and give thanks to my Guru, the Divine Sound Current that resonates within."

Shanti

Shanti

Many of the chants and mantras in this album are written by Guru Nanak, the First Guru of the Sikhs who lived from 1469 to 1538. Guru Nanak’s songs have amazing rhythm and poetry, and his message speaks to the Soul. One of Guru Nanak’s most well known gifts to our planet is the sacred composition called Japji. It is recited daily by hundreds of thousands of Sikhs throughout the world today. Japji has forty "pauris" or stanzas. The awareness imparted in these stanzas is simple, practical and uplifting for anyone on a spiritual path. Japji means meditation of the Soul. It is for all people, as this was Guru Nanak’s way. So whatever your path may be I invite you to sing these chants, feel the sacred words in your heart and partake of this timeless wisdom.

Mother's Blessings

Mother's Blessings

I once asked my mother where God is and she said, "right here". right here in this music, right here in our voices, right here with us" I then asked my mother if she prays for us, and she said "with every note, with every sacred word, and with every beat of the tabla I feel you here with me and surround you with love."

A great blessing for us as mother and daughter has been the making of this album. It is our hope that you will listen to these songs and remember the blessing of your Mother. On this gentle, deeply moving album, the intimate, musical conversation between mother and daughter wraps you in a soothing blanket of sound. Five classical kirtan tracks feature the rich vocal interplay between Prabhu Nam Kaur and her daughter, Snatam Kaur. Accompanied by layers of tabla, harmonium, viola, bansuri, keyboards, guitar and bass guitar. These devotional hymns are from the Sikh tradition of Gurbani Kirtan. The words are direct transmission from the Sound Current, recited by Amar Das, the bards Satte and Balwand, and Guru Arjan, who lived in the 16th century India. Anyone who sings or listens to these word with meditative mind and heart will be transported into the Sound Current from which the words have come.
