Freedom Chants from the Roof of the World

Freedom Chants from the Roof of the World

the Gyuto Monks

This is a masterful recording produced by Mickey Hart and recorded in the Cathedral of St John the Divine in New York. The acoustics are thus awesome and celebrate the imminence of peace on earth. This has always been one of our top sellers. The production has an extraordinary energy behind it: recorded on a full moon with 5000 people in the Cathedral the monks were given instructions by the Abbot that, during the Mahakala Offering ritual, there was a moment in the chant when the monks visualised millions of "music deities" streaming forth from the mandala, blessing the world’s people and pleasing the world's deities by performing every conceivable type of music known to men on earth. The Abbott invited the musicians to perform during that visualisation as representing the heavenly musicians. Additionally, the Japanese keyboard artist Kitaro, was invited to join the ensemble and a special composition was crested. This musical recording was made in the spirit of solitude with the Gyuto monks.
A very special recording

Samsara echoes the struggle of every person to find spiritual Enlightenment, "Samsara" in Sanskrit translates as "the world within" or, as the Buddha says, "the cycle of life, delusion and suffering which all sentient beings are part of". French composer Cyril Morin has produced an extraordinary, soothing sonic journey that includes the Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra, chants from the Lamas and Nuns of Ladakh; Tibetan bowls, Bansuri, Indian flute, Duduk, Ney, Srangi, Lyre, Mongolian and Tibetan violins, guitar, sanza. Snatam Kaur

Snatam Kaur was introduced to music and spiritual practice at an early age. Schooled in kirtan, meditation and Gurmukhi, the Sanskrit-based language of Sikh scriptures from Nothern India, the young Snatam Kaur began to develop the devotion and skills that have grown and blossomed into a compelling, profound talent.

Snatam Kaur’s parents brought her up in the Sikh tradition as taught by Yogi Bhajan. Her Sikh community augmented these lessons with instruction in kirtan (devotional chanting). “Through these experiences, I learned the pronunciation,” she says, “but also I learned the passion for what I was singing because these gatherings were so spiritual.”

Snatam Kaur: Shanti

Snatam Kaur: Shanti

Many of the chants and mantras in this album are written by Guru Nanak, the First Guru of the Sikhs who lived from 1469 to 1538. Guru Nanak’s songs have amazing rhythm and poetry, and his message speaks to the Soul. One of Guru Nanak’s most well known gifts to our planet is the sacred composition called Japji. It is recited daily by hundreds of thousands of Sikhs throughout the world today. Japji has forty "pauris" or stanzas. The awareness imparted in these stanzas is simple, practical and uplifting for anyone on a spiritual path. Japji means meditation of the Soul. It is for all people, as this was Guru Nanak’s way. So whatever your path may be I invite you to sing these chants, feel the sacred words in your heart and partake of this timeless wisdom.

Snatam Kaur: Mother's Blessings

Snatam Kaur: Mother's Blessings

I once asked my mother where God is and she said, "right here". right here in this music, right here in our voices, right here with us" I then asked my mother if she prays for us, and she said "with every note, with every sacred word, and with every beat of the tabla I feel you here with me and surround you with love."

A great blessing for us as mother and daughter has been the making of this album. It is our hope that you will listen to these songs and remember the blessing of your Mother. On this gentle, deeply moving album, the intimate, musical conversation between mother and daughter wraps you in a soothing blanket of sound. Five classical kirtan tracks feature the rich vocal interplay between Prabhu Nam Kaur and her daughter, Snatam Kaur. Accompanied by layers of tabla, harmonium, viola, bansuri, keyboards, guitar and bass guitar. These devotional hymns are from the Sikh tradition of Gurbani Kirtan. The words are direct transmission from the Sound Current, recited by Amar Das, the bards Satte and Balwand, and Guru Arjan, who lived in the 16th century India. Anyone who sings or listens to these word with meditative mind and heart will be transported into the Sound Current from which the words have come.

Tibetan Tantric Choir

Tibetan Tantric Choir

The Gyuto Monks

This is an album of prayer, not performance. Whenever this recording is played its prayers are effectively said anew - though their power depends less upon mechanistic reproduction than on the degree of attention and compassion with which the listener joins in the experience. The first side is text chanted entirely by voices, without instrumental accompaniment and the second is both vocal and instrumental
