Chinese Goddess of Mercy. Seated upon a weathered stone from which healing waters pour, this reproduction of a Chinese sculpture(10th-11th century) depicts the goddess in royal ease posture, ready to rise and help those in need. Here, Kuan-Yin images the equipoise we aspire to while immersed in our daily round.

Her distinctly androgynous features emphasize the tao of yin and yang, the dance of opposites in balance, which creates inner peace. Kuan-Yin corresponds with Artemis, Greek goddess of field and forest, and to the healing Celtic water-goddess Sequana.

Nichiren 7.5" statue

Nichiren Shonin was a religious reformer of the Kamakura era of Buddhism in Japan. He was considered by himself and most of Nichiren Buddhists as the votary of Jogyo Bodhisattva who promised the Eternal Buddha to spread the Lotus Sutra during the Latter day of the Law, "Mappo." His chosen name means "Sun" (Nichi) and "Lotus" (Ren). He distilled the essence of the Lotus Sutra, in the form of the chant, "Namu Myoho Renge Kyo" as the essential teaching of the Eternal Buddha.
