Guadalupe Virgin 9"

Guadalupe Virgin 9"

The Virgin of Guadalupe offers Miracles and Freedom from Enslavement. In 1531, this goddess appeared four times to Juan Diego in Mexico. Despite winter cold, flowers miraculously bloomed at her feet. Juan was directed to take them to the local bishop along with her message to desist in his enslavement of the native people. Her full Aztec name, Tonantzin Tlalli, means "Our Revered Mother Earth." Millions now worship this enshrined image in the Basilica of Guadalupe, Mexico City.

Black Madonna of Anjony 8"

Black Madonna of Anjony 8"

The resplendent Madonna from Anjony, France, is richly formal. Many Black Madonnas were not Christian images at all, but were venerated thousands of years prior to contact with the Christian faith. Unable to stamp out popular devotion to the mysterious Ladies, the Church renamed them "Madonna" simply to save face.

Black Madonna of Aurillac statue 7"

Black Madonna of Aurillac statue 7"

This Black Madonna certainly comes from a location reputed for Gnostic Wisdom.

Aurillac is known for the golden fleeces or lambskins stretched in the local river to catch gold particles, and for links to the pilgrim site at Compostella, Spain. Aurillac was the home of Gebert (later the first French Pope, Sylvester II the Gnostic) After a "liberating experience" with a Pagan priestess he apprenticed to a Moslem Alchemist and reportedly achieved the Great Work. He also bestowed his trust in the Goddess MeriDiana and in return received the gifts of her body, her riches, and her magical wisdom. He also supposedly invented a prophesizing magical head, the mechanical clock, the astrolabe, and brought Arabic numerals to Europe.

Through time, the names and sometimes the images of the Madonna and child have changed, but the location of these shrines, and the wide devotion to them has remained constant.

The Lost Madonna

Motherly love, mercy and boundless concern for her children are the hallmarks of this Madonna. She blesses the infertile with children and heals unhappy marriages. In the Middle Ages, she was highly celebrated with her own pilgrimage and festival in her town in central France.

This black Madonna was re-discovered during cathedral renovations in 1974. Sealed up in the walls, she stood hidden away and protected from some long forgotten danger. She is in symbol and in fact an example of reclaiming the Sacred Feminine.

Her jet black darkness was widely assumed to be due to her middle eastern blood. "The Bride is black, swarthy from her labors in her brothers' vineyards"- Song of Solomon.

Black Madonna of Einsiedeln Statue 9"

Our Lady of the Dark Forest.

The famous Black Madonna of Hermits is the national shrine of Switzerland. There is also a copy at St. Meinrad's Monastery in Indiana, USA.

She is revered by many writers around the world. During her September 14th festivals she is often the best dressed Madonna in the world due to the sumptuous robes and mantel created for her. Monks sing "Salve Regina" every day in her honor.

The chapel stands before a sacred dragon fountain from the Teutonic Pagan past and is a favored location for horse breeding. St. Meinrad's murderers were pointed out by two ravens (ascribed to the god Wotan) and his skull is kept in a golden casket beneath the Virgin's statue. The Swiss psychologist, C.G. Jung, has equated this Black Madonna with Isis in his writings.

The Madonna and child have been revered since the earliest times. Isis and Her son Horus, Mary and Her son Jesus, Demeter and Her daughter Kore, all have attracted a devout following. Long before Isis, and long before Mary or Demeter, the human psyche fashioned Madonna and child icons and placed them in sacred shrines.

Black Madonna Le Puy 9"

Black Madonna Le Puy 9"

As Virgin and Mother, she incorporated the two faces of the ancient triple goddess (Virgin, Matron, Crone) which were least threatening to the church, but her continuity with archaic virgin goddesses is indisputable.

As a later identity of Isis with Horus, she shows how papal and kingly thrones all hark back to the lap of Isis upon which sits enthroned the child-god. Each gave birth to savior gods who would die and be reborn in annual cycles (a parallel to the Demeter/Kore myth), and our modern festivals of Christmas and Easter re-celebrate this primeval human rite. Depicted as black virgin, this Madonna incorporates aspects of Kali. Medieval cathedrals (called in France "notre dame" – literally, "our lady") are venerations of the ancient Great Goddess's majesty.

Marsat the Valley of the Waters.

This flowing design stems from the twelfth century and has a cleansing and purifying nature. There is an annual pilgrimage to this church to thank the black virgin for saving the townfolk from the plague.

There is a legend that the entire church sometimes fills itself with warm light only to plunge into darkness whenever someone enters. The workmen labored in vain to finish the building, so it was completed by three small boys who mysteriously appeared and then later vanished.

Black Madonna of Meymac 8.5"

Black Madonna of Meymac 8.5"

This is one of the strangest and most interesting of the Black Virgins, according to Ean Begg. This gothic style icon is found in the French village of Correze. The wooden figure was originally part of a treasure of the Benedictine priory of St. Andrew of the Merovingian period. Black Madonnas are pre-christian archetypes whose child-nurturing focus is the embodiment of the pre-historic Great Mother. Perhaps her black skin represents the "under-earth" or winter/fallow season, emphasizing how death and darkness are an equal part of the wheel of life. Or perhaps she was originally a Goddess of a dark skinned people. A deceptively simple figure with many intricate layers of meaning to explore.

Her dark image appears across Europe and is passionately venerated in hundreds of locales. Actually, these ancient Ladies are the ineradicable face of the chthonic Great Goddess dating from Neolithic times. Often their shrines are associated with caves, wells or mountains, and her unvaryingly dark or black skin represents her under-earth or fallow winter aspect. Her shrine at Montserrat, near Barcelona, is very ancient; rich and colorful garments underscore her role as spiritual Mother-Queen of the Middle Ages.

Black Madonna des Neiges Statue 8"

Our Lady of the Snow.

This peace loving Black Madonna brought a huge snow storm stopping an advancing army and advancing the hour of sunrise to reveal the danger to the town of Aurillac, France. Perhaps she is also responsible for the snowstorms that swept Washington DC, urging the politicians to "chill out" on war.

One of the most beloved images in all Christianity is the The Black Madonna. Devotion to the Black Virgin has never been stronger, Her shrines attract thousands of worshippers each year. The Black Madonna is revered throughout the world, particularly in France, Poland, Italy and Spain. She is the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Crusades and holy pilgrimages.

Black Madonna of Rocamadour 8 1/2"

Black Madonna of Rocamadour 8 1/2"

This Black Madonna protects infants, calms storms at sea, frees captives, and promotes fertility. Metal shackles shed by former prisoners are heaped in gratitude at her feet. One of the many dolmens, menhirs and druid stones sacred to Sulivea, Goddess of the Alders (thought to be a form of Cybele), stands under her altar.

The image is housed in the lady chapel of this fantastic French town literally built into the hillside. Rocamadour was known as the site of worship of the triple Goddess Sulevea, Iduenna, and Minerva. Also home of a troup of women archers called Dianas who excluded men but "had relations" with fairies.

The Black Madonna is honored as a true Goddess figure, and has been since Christianity entered Europe. She is honored by many as Isis, Gaia, Kali, Mary, "the Other Mary" (Mary Magdalene), Diana, Sheela Na Gig, and the Ancient Primal Earth-Mother Goddess.

Black Madonna de Sous Terre 8 1/4"

Black Madonna de Sous Terre 8 1/4"

The Subterranean Black Madonna is found under the large Chartres Cathedral, itself a symphony of sacred geometry. This church is famous for its labyrinth and mysterious stone symbolism and carvings relating the Virgin to the Holy Grail and the Ark of the Covenant. The Underground chamber where the Black Virgin stands is reputed to be an ancient temple of the Great Goddess. Chartres itself is also said to be the capital of the ancient Druid world. This statue carries the magic of the Chartres tradition relating to the pre-Christian image of the Virgin Who Will Give Birth.

The ancient idol of the virgo paritura (virgin giving birth) was preserved in the Druid Grotto underneath the cathedral and was said to be a black statue of Mary. Chartres also has a ancient cult of the Well of the Strong.

The underground Black Madonna reflects the Hecate and Persephone archetypes. A powerful image of great symbolism.
